The number of tour buses on American roads has roughly doubled since 1975, greatly increasing the odds of bus wrecks like one that occurred recently in the remote desert at the Arizona-Nevada border.
In that collision, a Dallas Cowboys’ bus that was taking non-player personnel and between fifty and seventy-five fans to a promotional event in Las Vegas, and then onto the team’s training camp facility in California, crashed into a passenger van; four occupants in the van, who were all foreign tourists, were killed. Investigators determined that the van failed to yield the right-of-way to the bus. [Read more…] about More Football-Related Serious Injuries

A Tragic End To A Family Vacation
An 11-year-old boy was killed in a car crash as he returned to Lafayette from a trip to Alabama.
The wreck occurred in Foley, as Cameron Bailey was on the way home with a family friend from a vacation in Orange Beach. According to police, a male driver in a red pick-up truck, whose name was not released, apparently suffered from a medical emergency just before he swerved into oncoming traffic. Five other people were injured, including the SUV driver.
Mr. Bailey would have been in the sixth grade at Our Lady of Fatima School this fall. One of his former teachers at the school said that the people he came into contact with “will never forget Cameron’s smile.” [Read more…] about A Tragic End To A Family Vacation
‘A Gentleman And A Gunfighter’?
One hundred thirty years ago this month, notorious Wild West gunslinger Clay Allison, whose childhood brain injury probably explained his lifelong erratic and violent behavior, was killed in a wagon accident near his home in Pecos, Texas.
Mr. Allison was born around 1840 in Tennessee. Some years later, the Confederate Army discharged him for what doctors called a “partly epileptic and partly maniacal” condition, an almost certain reference to a brain injury. After the War of Northern Aggression, Mr. Allison moved west and either single-handedly or in cooperation with others killed several innocent people. He married in 1881, and though his violent rages ceased his bizarre behavior continued: he once rode naked through the streets of Mobeetie and, following a dispute with a dentist, pinned the hapless man to the ground and forcibly extracted one of his teeth with a pair of pliers. Feds Launch Probe Following Driverless Car Crashes
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is demanding answers from Tesla after its vehicles’ auto pilot feature allegedly failed in two separate incidents.
In May, 40-year-old Joshua Brown was killed when his Tesla Model S sedan apparently failed to distinguish a beige-colored tractor-trailer from the bright sky and did not apply the brakes. After the car passed under the trailer at full speed and its roof sheared off, it drove off the road, crashed through at least two fences, and finally slammed into a pole. Apparently, the air bag never deployed. The manufacturer has until August 28 to produce data concerning its vehicles’ Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems. Animal Attack Raises Landowner Liability Questions
A disturbing incident at a Walt Disney World beach highlights the danger that victims may experience this summer.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings says his office will not press charges against Melissa and Will Graves, of Omaha, Neb., after a giant alligator snatched their 2-year-old son off a beach that was marked “No Swimming.” However, the park owners did not post any warning signs about alligators, and a Walt Disney World representative said that the park would “thoroughly review” the situation. Sheriff Demings said that both his agency and the state wildlife department would look into the matter as well.
Divers found Lane Graves’ lifeless body about 16 hours after his parents reported the initial incident. [Read more…] about Animal Attack Raises Landowner Liability Questions
